Moulin Rouge

Courtesan…Geisha…Escort…Street walker…and lately, GRO…Euphemisms for the oldest profession, according to those in the know. But I’m not talking about them here, for who am I to judge?

In the 70’s there’s this Heber Bartolome song about the plight of the many Nena’s in our society. He poignantly presented the side of these women, and why they have been trapped in that unthankful trade in the first place. Heber’s contemporaries like Florante, Asin, Mike Hanopol, Sampaguita, Coritha, and the legendary Freddie Aguilar, also presented the ills, drama, and levity of our culture through their songs. At a very young age, I was subtly introduced to the realities of life through their haunting lyrics and catchy melodies.

I wonder where the likes of these artists are now.

Movie Recall: Moulin Rouge(2001)

The Story: The year is 1899, and Christian, a young English writer, has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's drug and prostitute infested underworld. And nowhere is the thrill of the underworld more alive than at the Moulin Rouge, a night club where the rich and poor men alike come to be entertained by the dancers. But things take a wicked turn for Christian as he starts a deadly love affair with the star courtesan of the club, Satine. Her affections are also coveted by the club's patron: the Duke. A dangerous love triangle ensues as Satine and Christian attempt to fight all odds to stay together but a force that not even love can conquer is taking its toll on Satine.

My Review:
I was definitely entertained by the wit and uniqueness of the movie. From the hilarious opening credits, to the melodious songs, to the acting, to the set. I fell in love with Ewan McGregor a hundred times here. I wished I had Nicole Kidman's beauty and class--pre-botox. And who would think that she can make fun of herself? I wanted to sing and dance Lady Marmalade and Tango with the Chorus. Nakakahilo. Nakakalurkey. But so worth watching.
Trivia:
Courtney Love auditioned for Satine, and allowed Baz Luhrmann to use Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the opening sequence, a rare case of allowing her late husband Kurt Cobain's work to be used in film or TV.
Courtney Love has gone on record calling losing the role of Satine to Nicole Kidman one of the biggest disappoints of her career and made no secret of her resentment against Kidman. Director Baz Luhrmann characterized the difference between the two actresses in a Vanity Fair article by saying "Courtney is fire and Nicole is ice." This prompted Love to remark that Kidman was "a puddle" and dedicate the song "Miss World" (a song about a self-loathing beauty queen) to Kidman on her 1999 tour with her band Hole.
Filming was halted for two weeks in November 1999 after Nicole Kidman fractured two ribs and injured her knee while rehearsing a dance routine for the film. Many of the scenes where she is seen only from the chest up, including "A real actress!", were shot while she was in a wheelchair.
During Satine's trapeze entrance, blue light was used due to Nicole Kidman's pale skin tone, the director found that the blue light made her almost "glow" and therefore stood out during the scene.
"Come What May" was written by David Baerwald for Romeo + Juliet (1996) but not used. In Moulin Rouge, it is newly written for the stage show by Christian. It is the only completely original song in the entire film. However, because it was written for another film, it was disqualified for the Oscars' Best Song award.

Ayan, nainlababo na naman ako kay Ewan!!

I'm a Midas

I took a fun test today. As if I don't know that there is an art to seduction.
Suhweet!

But wait. But wasn't Midas also the unhappiest because he touched everything to gold, including his loved ones? So in the end, he was ultra rich, but lonely.

On the contrary, this result gives me the creeps too.

Wadabowtchu?  Try mo!

Wish I Could Dance...

...like them.
...To just express myself using my arms and legs, and soar in heights, and let go of my feelings through fluid motions.
...To be caught up in the moment and kiss someone just because of the surge of adrenalin.

This couple, Melanie and Marko, of So You Think You Can Dance Season 8, danced so breathtakingly in all of their routines together. But my clear favorites were these below.

By the way, as if it changes anything, Marko is a Fil-Am from Guam. And he made Lady Gaga cry with his expressive and impeccable dancing.

As I found out, dance, among only a few things, can give me goosebumps.

All Present!

Thanks, P-Noy, for the four-day respite from work and school!  Honestly, I don't even know why a 2-day consecutive holiday was announced. Not that I am complaining though. Because of this, I don't have to wait for sem break to see the whole Fam present in our Bacolod 'headquarters' again for a much-needed family bonding. The last time we were under the same roof was when I had shingles in June, and I was quarantined in a separate room. So that was not even counted.

The Daughter was ribbing me about the ‘Balikbayan Box’ that the Hubby and she have been saving up for me from Cebu. Every now and then when they drop by Ayala Mall or S&R or SM Hypermart or when the Hubby goes to Manila, the two stooges call me and ask me what I want in the store (Hah, now they are called the Shopping Hubby and Buddy!). So I’m excited what knick knacks they have accumulated for me. Hehehe. Para silang galing abrowd. Or prowbinsiya. It depends on your point of view. But there’s a catch as to why the Daughter has been ultra thoughtful. She is again raiding my closet to "borrow" some of my clothes. Ex-deal daw. Sige na nga.
Syempre shampoo and conditioner, cologne, MAC lipstick, and a hand-me-down Blackberry.
I tell you Dove Baby soap smells the most adorable!

Junk, junk, junk food!!! Eyeluvett!!!
Who cares about the extra pounds lurking in there?

Anyways, the five of us are planning to just laze and graze in the house to do nothing. The master plan is no one is to lift his head from the pillow. Okay, we compromise on sitting at the dining table. But that’s as far as we are willing to go.

Hay, this is what I call heaven on earth, noh?

Wazzup, Wazzup, Rachelle Peneyra

I first met Bing at…
UP freshman block 24(?) sa Eng'g. There were only 5(?) of us girls then.

I remember Bing…
I have so many memories of her, like her kikay outfits while the rest of us just wore jeans and shirts... the time we counted how many jeans my crush must have had because it seemed like he wore new jeans everyday for a month!... the day she said she auditioned for concert chorus and sang lupang hinirang..hahaha!... when she knocked herself out at tia maria and had to be hauled out by two[!] waiters.... and most of all, never tiring of my lamentations about anything =)

I’m now based in…
in QC, teaching[!] to make sure college students don't mess up like i did.

I’m busy with…
I'm busy with trying to get in great shape... dancing and teaching dance... and teaching kids how to love their bodies.

I can cook…
spicy tuna spaghetti and yummy choco chip cookies =)

My closet is full of…
memories of all that i have become...

My most fave me-place is...
the spa, getting a relaxing, stress-releasing massage. sigh!

My obsession is…
earrings? hahaha!!! i love earrings that will frame my face. i also love dance and doing as the music does unto me.

Life is…
just life. We live, we die, as God has planned. What we do in between is the ride. And life is still life

I don't mind having more…
new things to learn and more friends to make. And most of all, I will never mind having more earrings!!!!

Now, Rachelle is…

Forrest Gump

Many parents hope that the little John they are cradling in their arms become future Einsteins. Actually, some of these mommies and daddies believe that their child really is the smartest.

When I was bringing my little tots to pre-school, a lot of fierce mamas talk about their young ones like they are the next Bill Gates, or Lea Salonga or Lisa Macuja. So how do we know that we are not just blinded by our unconditional love for our kids? How do we distinguish real giftedness, as opposed to genius only in our biased eyes?
Issa, Carlo, and Paolo, during their elementary years

According to www.lilsugar.com, here are ten signs to determine if your most precious is gifted, in the real sense of the word:

1.       Retains a wide variety of information accurately and can recall it after some period of time.

2.      Is interested in a myriad of things like dinosaurs, cars, planets, or countries.

3.      Can write and read early, even without formal teaching.

4.      Is talented in music or arts.

5.      Has a good memory of events that happened even when he was still smaller.
6.      Has a long attention span and shows intense concentration on a subject.

7.      Has an advanced vocabulary. Not just an early talker, but he can describe things accurately using more difficult words.

8.     Has a keen eye for details. The child notices small things which we normally ignore.

9.      Are critical of themselves. The child knows when he makes a mistake and often corrects it, or asks someone for help to correct him.

10.  Understands complicated concepts and can think abstractly.

Topshop Leggings

I am past that stage of trying to squeeze the genius juices in my three kids, for they are now in their mid-teens, and they think they are now much brighter than their ol’ mum. (Hmp!) I’m not sure if the Hubby and I have done everything to maximize their potentials, what I’m sure is that we have done the best we could. For that, we are quite happy of how the Kiddos have turned out, and are still turning out to be.

Movie Recall: Forrest Gump   (1994)

The Story:

The story follows the life of low I.Q. Forrest Gump and his meeting with the love of his life Jenny. The film chronicles his accidental experiences with some of the most important people and events in America from the late 1950's through the 1970's including a meeting with Elvis Presley, JFK, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, fighting in Vietnam, etc. The problem is, he's too stupid to realize the significance of his actions. Forrest becomes representative of the baby boomer generation having walked through life blindly.
My Review:

Of course Tom Hanks' acting was impeccable. It was expected of him. But what impressed me most is how he has become a real Forrest Gump in my eyes. His characterization made me understand how geniuses are different in their forms.
Even my Daughter was not spared of this strong impression--we often crack up when she imitates how Forrest Gump talks in the movie. That's when I discovered the Daughter is a genius after all.

Trivia:

Bill Murray, John Travolta and Chevy Chase turned down the role of Forrest Gump. Travolta later admitted that passing on the role was a mistake.

Gary Sinise's lower legs were wrapped in a special blue fabric that allowed them to be optically removed from the film by computer later.

Tom Hanks' younger brother Jim Hanks doubled for him in many of his numerous running sequences.

Tom Hanks said that he would make the film only if all the events that took place were true to historical reality. Tom Hanks wasn't paid for the film. Instead he took percentage points which ultimately netted him in the region of $40 million.
The condition that Jenny was being treated for at the end of the movie was probably HIV. She says in the movie that the doctors do not know what the virus is and that they can do nothing about it. She mentions that she is being treated in Atlanta; the Centers for DIsease Control in Atlanta did some of the first US research on the epidemiology and treatment of HIV/AIDS; and the time that she died was the time the virus was first being discovered. Based on what we see of her life, she is in several of the categories that were at the highest risk for contracting HIV, including IV drug users and women who have unprotected sex with many partners.

Mahal Kong Babsy...

Naku, menage a trois? Nunca!

Tapos, nag-Life in the Spirit Seminar pa tayong dalawa.

Doon sa isang Krismas parti ng MC, nag-duet kami ni Egay ng “Santa, make her my bride for Christmas…” At nadiskubre naming may tainga pala kami sa musika. So nagkalakasan ng loob na sumali kami sa UP Concert Chorus. Ganyan kita ka-lab! Hehehe!!!

Alam mo, wala tayong pera noon. Ay lab yu, my fwend!

Ay, oo nga pala. Haberdey na rin!

Upon This Rock

Yesterday, I went to church with my Paolo (Sniff! Kami na lang dalawa ang magkasamang magsimba every Sunday), and the gospel was about Peter, the rock.

Today, my good friend Edgar Labor posted a song by the UP Concert Chorus ’90, which was my favourite, Upon This Rock. I remember that every time we sang this song, it always gave me goosebumps. If I had not been singing this song and just listening, I probably would have cried in the audience.

Now that I'm a mere listener, I almost cried again. Please listen to it and tell me how you feel.

Thanks, Egay for posting this song. This will be my evening prayer from now on.

Happy Birthday, Ben!

Ben, isdatchu? Ay, si pokwang pala!
Pardon my French.

Pardon my French. This is a tribute to my dear sister Benilyn, or Ben. It’s her birthday today. If you haven’t had the luck to be her friend, well, you have been missing a great deal in your life. Why? Because the moment you have the chance to interact with Ben, you will be rolling in laughter for sure. Pokwang (according to some anonymous person, let’s hide her under the name ‘Bing’, they look exactly alike) can’t hold a candle next to her, as far as jokes and sense of humour are concerned.
It’s not true that we are four girls and one boy. The fact is, we are four girl gays and (oh, all right!) only one boy in the Alvarez Family. And when we talk about being gay, this fourth sister of ours carries the gay flag of in front of the pack.
But wait, girls and boys and those in between, if you are wondering who the real Ben is, let me introduce her to you. There is a rumour that when she looks in the mirror, she sees none other than Gelli de Belen. Take a closer look. Amazing, right? She really looks like Janice’s daughter, er, sister.

Sometimes in a wink of an eye, she says she transforms into Agot Isidro. This is really scary! But the similarity looks so real. It's like they are doppelgangers!
Tarush! Walang kakabog dito!

But she has not always been a beautiful swan, because she was really an ugly duckling when we were young. There was one time when all the suitors of the three elder sisters were in the house at the same time, while our main actress was watching TV alone. Our father saw her, went up to her, hugged her and said, “My dear daughter, don’t accept suitors yet, okay? You are still much too young!” She wanted to laugh as loudly as she could and retort, “Why, Pa, do you think someone will really want to court me?” But insecurity was never an issue for Ben, maybe she knew that that girl would turn to be a fine and beautiful woman someday.
Atribida at palaging gusto’y um-o-aura.

Out of all Mama Olive’s daughters, she was the favourite of my Lola Virgie (May she rest in peace!). Because she was always active and talkative. She always wanted to be in the spotlight on stage. However, she doesn’t have a talent in singing. It’s just pure guts. What a shame. Why did she have to idolize her eldest sister too much, when she knew that the gap between them is millions of miles away. (So should we now start our ‘Feel good’ session?)
Layp is gud.
She even copied her ideal husband. She also fell in love with someone from Petron. But no hard feelings. Neil is really lucky to have her. They were even blessed with two beautiful angels. Life is good.

Don’t lie to me! Pak!
And now you are past 40, Ben. Are we already old (But beautiful just the same!). Don’t lie to me! But never have we had a bad argument. I remember you saying that I'm your best friend sister. Well, there was one time when you lied that you were prettier than me, but know that I will never take it against you. I’ll just let you wallow in that illusion. Pak!

You’ve come a long way, Ben. Hope you have all the blessings your heart desires. Know that you are always in my prayers. Love you much. Iskayf tayo mamaya?
Skype later?

Two Hours with Luis

I had lunch in Iloilo today.

The Youngest texted me last Thursday that he was sort of grounded by their dorm manager in Philippine Science because, get this, he hasn't changed his bedsheets for 3 months. His reason? He forgot to bring some spare. Hay, boys!!! So I told him I would personally go to their dorm to change his beddings. At first, he didn't like the idea. But after I insisted, he said yes.

That's his dorm building at the background

So there I went to PhiSci. When I saw his room---mama mia, what a mess! And the smell, ha? Papers, shoes, socks, dirty clothes were strewn everywhere. Of course, I couldn't clean the whole room, since he shares it with three of his classmates. So like the good mother that I am pretending to be, I cleaned his drawer, his closet, and yes, changed his bed sheets and pillowcases. In other words, just his corner of the room. That was the best I could do, amid his protests of, "Mom, you don't need to do that!"

Then we went to SM to have lunch together. I could see that he hasn't been eating enough. So eating out was a big treat for him. Sigh, wawa naman my baby...

Loalde blouse
Promod skirt
Parisian wedges

But I had a sweet two-hour rendezvous with him. He told me a few things about his school life, his classmates, his liking for DOTA. Plus I was able to hug and kiss him again.

For now, that should be enough for his old mother.

Transforming the Boys

Not that I am complaining, but everything was really quite different when the Daughter was still here. With Issa, I can hold her hand while walking in the malls, while the boys seem to be uncomfortable walking side by side with their mom (e gusto ko, HH pa naman!). With Issa, I can take my time doing my shopping, while with the boys, I can only ‘window shop’ for 30 minutes tops. With Issa, we talk about anything, like actors, fashion, even about my work; but with my sons, the topic is limited to, “Have you brushed your teeth?” (or similar to that line).

I'm listening, m'boys!!
But hope is not all lost. Lately, the sons have no choice but to talk to me. Like with Paolo, my second, every afternoon when I pick him up from school, he makes a run-down of what he did for the day. He says, “Okay, now what did I do today worth telling you, Mom?” And then he tells me his activities for the day, his performance in school compared to others. He even quizzed me on some IQ questions one time in the car. (Yeah, that’s what fun means to him—hehehe!!!)  The other weekend, when Carlo came home, I asked him if he still plays basketball with his friends. He said yes, and he also started rambling about NBA teams and his favourite players. I didn’t even know that he is now interested (and knowledgeable!) in NBA in the first place. I have to brush up on who Wade and Dirk and Lebron are.

I have already watched three movies with just the Boys, (Pirates, Transformers, and HP7 Part2) and we have animatedly discussed the movie after. So I’m thinking that maybe there’s something good in not having Issa around all the time (sorry, Dawter!). I tend to concentrate too much on chatting with her because I was assuming that my sons are not willing to share their minds and hearts out to their mom.

Boy, was I wrong.

                                                                 Weng

Dear Weng...Happy birthday, my little sister.
May you have joy and good health all year!
Your birthday 12 years ago.
And how old were you then?
