I bloomed in the 80’s fashion. Or should I say, I tried to.
Looking at my pictures when I was in high school and college, I can’t help but cringe at how I fixed up myself before. Sooo baduy, my daughter would say. Yes, the 80’s was known to be decadent, colourful, print-crazy, over-the-top. But come to think of it, there are 80’s fashion trends that are creeping back into the latest fashion trends. They have just been given a modern twist. Let’s look at them, shall we?

They have just been given a modern twist. Let’s look at them, shall we?
1. Shoulder Pads. Nyahaha! We used to put shoulder pads EVERY single time—under blazers, dresses, even under a T-shirt. Shh, we tucked it under our bra straps or put some safety needles to make sure they didn’t fall off.
Are the pads obvious?;-) |

Of course they shunned the pads decades after. But after renaming the sillhouette as 'architecturally-inspired', look who’s trying to make a comeback on the runway!
2. Madonna-look. Big, ratty hair, lace and see-through blouses, tons of necklace. That’s how we loved the iconic Madonna, and a lot of us followed the Material Girl’s sense of fashion.

My passport circa 1990. It's a wonder the photographer didn't crop off my bangs! |
4. Baston jeans and leggings. The tighter they are the better. The jeans were painfully tight that they made my hair legs eternally curly. Haha. Now, technology has given birth to stretch jeans materials so it is possible to have them contour our legs without losing blood circulation at the end of the day.
5. Jelly shoes made our feet smelly because they were made of synthetic plastic. But that didn’t stop us from coveting them and collecting different colors of these see-through thingies. Now, jelly shoes are making a come back. Why, they are even more expensive and high end, like the Melissa shoes.
Jellies flood the market now! |
I'm sure my friends can still add more things to this list. So if you are thinking of throwing your last season’s favourite fashion item because they are passé and so yesterday, you might want to think again. Keep them in your baul first. Who knows, twenty years from now, they might be the 'in' thing again.
And oh, how your children (and yes, grandchildren) would thank you for that.
