On Broadway

I love the theatre. No, not the I-MAX, digital sensurround kind, but the good ol’ fashioned stage theatre. There’s something magical when actors interpret a story right before my eyes. Nothing beats raw emotions, though most of the times exaggerated, to convey the plot on stage. Oh, especially if it’s a musical.

I’ve been lucky to have viewed three of the best musicals in the history of Broadway and Drury Lane. I’ve seen Miss Saigon in London, Les Miserables in New York, and Phantom of the Opera in Chicago, all courtesy of the UP Concert Chorus, thank you very much. The experience of watching those consummate thespians sing and act on stage was something I could never forget.

It’s a pity that a lot of people don’t appreciate stage plays. Amidst this day and age of CGI overload, the stage theatre would always have a spot in my heart.

When I grow up, I want to be on Broadway.

I’m loving Wolverine!

P.S. There was a buzz in the theatre world lately about a certain indie director whose movie was accepted in the Cinemalaya Film Festival. His major booboo came when he was interviewed last by Lexi Schulze in Cityscape of ANC. The host asked him why he hires stage actors in his films and he smugly answered:

"Because they don't complain. You can feed them Skyflakes three meals a day or pay them in cat food. They're never late and they cry when you want them to cry."  http://www.spot.ph/the-feed

Award!!!! No wonder theatre people are asking for his big head and his film on a silver plate. I heart theatre people because UPCC is almost a small sister of the stage. I heard this guy already apologized, but the damage has been done. I doubt if any actor would work for him again.

Even his mother, Atty. Katrina Legarda, commented on the SPOT site:

hay naku. I knew i should have switched Rafa's baby formula from Purina to Whiskas. Tsk tsk.

Not even a mother's love could forgive this statement.
